Sometimes when you beat your head against the wall you break through. Other times you just end up with a bloody head.

Some of these are things and some are ideas or attitudes. All are meant with the idea that we can probably spend our time in more productive ways than pursing these ideas or living in denial.  If you don't like the concept, maybe you should skip directly to no. 6.  Enjoy.

    The Tornado Jam

The Tornado Jam was a moment in time. But it's not coming back.

There will be no great gather of local and national rock and country. There will be no concert that the whole city turns out to see. The Tornado Jam was as much Joe Ely gathering his friends for a show as anything else.

Unfortunately, we don't have another Joe Ely here to do this kind of thing. Natalie Maines could have restarted the legacy, but I don't really see why she'd call in any favors for Lubbock.

    Downtown

I really appreciate the efforts of those who invest in downtown, but I don't think the people of Lubbock are buying into the idea.

Part of the reason is something I've brought up before, and that's the way our community leaders just let the city spread out without encouraging growth in existing areas. I really think it would take even more heavy-hitters than we have now to make Lubbock's downtown a draw for anybody that doesn't work at the courthouse.

    We Need More Franchises

Hey, I would love a Del Taco. Some folks would love a Pappadeux's. You know what I'd love more? Some local chefs to step up and put their own spin on the cuisine of their choice.

It's not easy and not many can do it, but if the locals can maintain quality control, then they'll get my business every time. The same goes for any type of store or business.

It's simple: With more local businesses, more money stays in the Hub.

    Our Music Scene Is Special

I fail to see how "Lubbock Music" is anymore special or abundant than any other town this size. This isn't to say we don't have some great artists; I'm saying every town this size has some great artists.

I don't think we're better than Amarillo or Phoenix or wherever. Saying we're not special doesn't have to be a negative either. In fact, if we can get past the idea that we're special, maybe we can work a little harder to publicize what we've got.

    Lubbock or Leave It

This one puts a burr under my saddle. The idea that you can't criticize or try to make things better is so patently, incredibly stupid it amazes me.

At one point in time, somebody said 'you know, these cars are great, but I'm tired of people flying through the windows during an accident.' From that complaint, seat belts were invented. Then, somebody complained, 'man, sometimes driving is boring.' From that complaint, they started putting radios in cars.

Lubbock needs work, and we should always constantly be asking ourselves how to make it better and not inviting the dissatisfied to leave.

If You Ignore It, It Will Go Away

Probably the best examples of this topic are Lubbock's constant struggles with STDs, crime and shigellosis. They certainly rank as three problems that we deal with over and over and over again.

I guess some conservative Lubbock folk are against teaching their kids about sex, resulting in the kids catching the crotch cooties. On the surface, Lubbock looks nice, so we ignore the fact that we're one of the leading places for violent crime. And then there's the dirty doody-hands disease (shigellosis) that seems to be an epidemic at the beginning of every school year.

We ignore these topics because they are embarrassing, and it's time to get over that.
