I don't know if there is anything people like as much as being thanked (maybe when you rub their bellies, but I'm not sure).

I've mentioned this before, but I still think it's valid.  Heathen and I will head out for food once or more a week. At some point a couple years ago, we made the conscious decision to start thanking everyone who served us in the fast food places.  Sure you say "thank you" after you get your burrito and sit down, what we do is after we're done, we go back to the counter and thank everyone we can make eye contact with. It's quick and easy. We just say "thank you", "that was awesome" and/or "good job".  You wouldn't believe how just telling these people thank you brightens them up. I've carried this over into pretty much all of my dealings with anyone from bank tellers to checkout people.

I'm not here to tell you what a good guy I am, I'm here to tell you two things, and that would be how much you change a persons outlook just by being thankful, and judging by the surprised look I get sometimes, not enough people are doing it.  We're all working harder than we have before. Some people are underpaid and some are working two or three jobs. The least you can do is empathize and encourage them. I know many of my religious friends give thanks to their creator, how about a few seconds more for those "boots on the ground"? It will come back to you, I promise.
