January 13 is AMBER Alert Awareness Day in Texas, proclaimed Governor Rick Perry.

The AMBER Alert program was established in the Dallas/Fort Worth area following the 1996 abduction and murder of nine-year-old Arlington resident Amber Hagerman. Law enforcement and media partnered to quickly disseminate information on the missing child. More than 700 children have been successfully recovered using the amber alert initiative since that time. According to amberalert.gov, AMBER is an acronym for America’s Missing: Broadcast Emergency Response

AMBER Alert programs have been established in all 50 states as well as Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands. The main contact for Texas’ branch is the Sam Allen Texas Department of Public Safety.

To receive up to the moment information on amber alerts, follow TxDOT on Twitter @TX Alerts. Active AMBER Alert cases are also updated at the Texas Department of Public Safety’s website.
