The team had a very bad, not-so-good day. Now, everyone's become a football expert and knows exactly what needs to be done.

The real argument about Texas Tech football is that Texas Tech performed so badly on Saturday that something needs to be done. Can we all agree on that? We could even go so far as to say Texas Tech has performed so erratically and/or badly this year that something needs to be done.

Now comes a big question: What makes you think you know what's going on? You could say that you saw a lack of mental focus and a lack of effort and/or discipline. Okay, good, got that. So we're good so far.

You then would make the assertion that the team lacks discipline and can't get the job done because of poor coaching. Well, here's where your argument starts to fall apart a little. This is something you have no real proof of.

The coach may have done everything humanly possible to whip these guys into mental shape, and maybe this group of guys just aren't and/or maybe never will be mentally tough enough. Maybe we focus too much time recruiting offense to focus on defense, and the poor defense just poisoned the well as far as the team's mental toughness goes. Maybe the guys all ate some bad fish on the way to Ames, Iowa. You see, there's a lot of maybes here to sort through.

I continue to go back to my sophomore year in high school when there was a team in the district so bad they called all us sophomores up to Varsity to play and beat them. The next year, the same guys, the same school, the same coach won district. They had to hit bottom to get that mental toughness to win.

We could keep changing out coaches forever to suit the boo-birds, but let's look at some facts other than the win-loss record. On most game days, we have a killer, amazing offense. On defense, we named our SEVENTH coordinator since 2009 just last year. Coach Gibbs has a proven track record and he should be given more time to build the program.

So, boo-birds, most of you who have never coached or even stepped onto a football field, maybe you need to get used to the fact that we can keep throwing diamonds in the rough out, or we can keep polishing until we have a diamond.
