Covenant Children's Hospital is the first hospital in the South Plains to adopt an exclusive human milk diet for premature infants.

Covenant Children's announced the launch of a donor breast milk program benefiting premature infants in the neonatal intensive care unit. Covenant Children's will now use standardized neonatal nutritional products made by Prolacta Bioscience.

"In an effort to further decrease the risk of potentially fatal necrotising enterocolitis in extremely premature babies, Covenant NICU has started using Prolacta proactively," Regional Medical Director of Neonatology Service Dr. Maheshwar Thummala said.

Although they will add Prolacta to its treatment options, Covenant Children's will still accept donor milk to feed less critically-ill infants.
