If you're living in a home built as recently as 2000 and it suffers a lightning strike, you may be in more danger than most.

According to a release from the Brennen Teel Foundation, yellow-jacketed Corrugated Stainless Steel Tubing (CSST) used in the Lubbock area as recently as 2000 may be susceptible to springing a dangerous gas leak if a home is struck by lightning.

As you know, our area is privy to some pretty dramatic storms and incredible lightning shows.

According to Everything Lubbock, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) registered 906 lightning strikes in the Lubbock area in 2014. That's a lot!

The Teel Foundation is named after Brennen Teel, a Lubbock man who died after a lightning strike blew small holes into his home's gas tubing, causing a fire and the subsequent death of Mr. Teel.

Lubbock Fire Marshal Garrett Nelson told KLBK that anyone with a home that's outfitted with these kinds of pipes suffers a lightning strike, they should notify the fire department immediately.
