The Dallas Mavericks today announced a partnership deal with Replay Technologies to bring an innovative new instant replay technology to the American Airlines Center in Dallas.

The Friday, Nov. 21, announcement showcased the new freeD technology that is currently being implemented, report the Mavericks. The system will bring three-dimensional footage of every play within the arena which will be incorporated into their live broadcasts.

But what is freeD?

A series of high-end cameras – Teledyne Dalsa Falcon 2’s – have been installed throughout the arena. The FreeD technology will compile data from each camera and render the footage into a three-dimensional representation with the freedom to change camera position or perspective to any location.

Our technology works by capturing reality not as just a two-dimensional representation, but as a true three-dimensional scene, comprised of three-dimensional “pixels” that faithfully represent reality. This information is stored as a freeD™ database, which can then be tapped to create (render) any desired viewing angle from the multi dimensional information."

Replay posted a video to Vimeo demonstrating the visuals of the new system

The Maverick’s Owner, Mark Cuban, said the technology will entice fans and coaching staff alike.

We're excited to offer this technology to Mavs fans as well as our players, as we work with Replay to showcase never before seen footage of our games. By seeing the game from a unique position, our coaches and team will have a greater advantage by being proactive in their approach and strategy."

The technology is currently in place at the American Airlines Center and Replay Technologies are training staff on the use of the system. FreeD footage will be incorporated into broadcasts within the next several months.
