I am sometimes caught between the old school and the new school in Lubbock music. I was around when blues ruled the town and when many of the people who now play happy hours were in bands trying to make it big.  Like most people, these musicians stuck with whatever genre that was most popular when they were in their teens in twenties.  Myself, I've always kept up with popular trends and just enjoy the heck out of it when I hear a new band.  Yesterday, I made an assumption that got me into a bit of trouble with the old school.

I wrongly assumed that the people who helped Jesse Taylor get on the Walk Of Fame would find it amusing that I put forth the notion that Zoe Brittan should be on the Walk of Fame.  Zoe is a porn star from Lubbock who specialize in girl/girl films and has been VERY successful.  Well now, that they've won the political fight to get Jesse on the Walk, some of these people have forgot the  nonsense that goes with having someone, no matter how deserving, being honored.  I'm not down with the thing at all because I don't think they'll ever honor the real hardworking musicians from West Texas except in the rarest of cases.

Now where I have problem is the folks who raised objection to this notion as thinking that any blues musician is somewhat more noble than Miss Brittan.  Sure, this town is never going to honor a porn star; my nomination is in jest.  But let's not pretend that the West Texas musicians that were playing in grimy Lubbock clubs until three in the morning are saints. I was there, they partied and played to intensely liquored up crowds who then got in their cars and drove home.  There was NOTHING noble, classic or honorable about it. It was a bunch of folks getting trashed until the clubs closed, then heading to house parties and getting trashed some more.  None of us were saints.
