This may not be the scariest. These may not even be my personal favorites. These are the best movies for really setting the tone for Halloween.

5. Trick Or Treat. This one is a tiny bit sketchy, but it has that "watching a movie about Halloween on Halloween" thing working for it.  Plus, everybody has now fallen in love with "Sam".

4. House Of Thousand Corpses. Looking back, Rob Zombies first flick is a hodge-podge of ideas that were liberated from other flicks (most Texas Chainsaw Massacre), but it's done so well that it's excusable.

3. Evil Dead (the new version). I guess I might catch a little flack for this one, but the original Evil Dead I & II have some comedic elements to them. This one is straight up edge of your seat terror.  I really can't recommend it enough.

2. The Exorcist.  This one rarely even makes my personal list of favorites, but there is something about the setting and the way the story unfolds that is so intense you'll be hearing noise from the kitchen that aren't really there. Keep in mind the trailer looks a little cheesy but once you're sucked into the movie, you're sucked in until the end.

1. Halloween. Yes, it's an obvious choice, but there's something about watching this movie about a madman out on Halloween, while there are actual Trick Or Treaters outside.  I like the Rob Zombie version, but go for the original.

Bonus:

If you haven't ever been exposed to The Blair Witch Project, then now is the time. It is almost an incomplete film, but that's part of the charm. I can't remember a final scene haunting me more than the final frames of this one.
