The Food Network posted a list of the best pizza places in all 50 states. Surprisingly, a Lubbock restaurant won for all of Texas. But it wasn't the one I thought it would be.

First off, it's pretty surprising that a Lubbock restaurant won a competition that beat out every other pizza in all of Texas. I'm not trying to devalue this restaurant by any means; they're great at what they do. But are they the best in all of Texas?

The Hill Country Pizza from West Crust Pizza on west 82nd Street won the honor.

Let me start by saying congratulations to West Crust Pizza on the win! They make really excellent pizza to be sure. Easily some of the best in Lubbock, if not the state.

But what were the judges' criteria? I ask because this particular pizza is not what most of the world would call pizza. It has mozzarella, feta, turkey bacon, and glazed pecans. It's really, really good.

But...I mean...turkey bacon and pecans? That's not really pizza to me. At least not what I would have thought had someone asked me where to get good pizza.

I would have said go to One Guy From Italy. It is an actual guy from Italy. A few of them, really. Jerry the owner and Dario the pizza mastermind, both actual Italians who make real pizza. (I dare you to go and ask for turkey bacon and glazed pecans -- go ahead, I'll wait.)

So again, I'm not trying to take anything away from the fine folks and fantastic pizza at West Crust, but if you had asked me about PIZZA, I would have never thought about the Hill Country. Just one man's opinion, though. Feel free to blast my food ignorance all over the internet with your opinions; I can take it.

(By the way, I'm pretty sure no one from The Food Network came to Texas and tried all the pizza places to arrive at this conclusion. How they chose the winners is a secret that shall never be revealed, I think.)
