'Go Tell Aunt Rhody,' the Song in the Resident Evil 7 Trailer

Capcom has revealed what looks like a Resident Evil experience unlike any other, and the Japanese game developer's choice in music helped set an unnerving atmosphere for the title's debut trailer.

You can hear the lyrically-tweaked version of the folk song Go Tell Aunt Rhody in the Resident Evil 7 debut trailer above. While the song plays, men explore a dilapidated plantation, haunting images flash onscreen and a wolf's head decays in seconds.

Shortly after the Resident Evil 7 trailer was released by Capcom Monday night during Sony's E3 2016 press conference, it didn't take fans long to find a video of the song on YouTube -- one recorded by Burl Ives and noticeably less creepy. His version of the folk song can be heard below. (By the way: Read the comments in the YouTube video if you want a chuckle. You can see the exact moment it goes from 'Oh, I play this song on violin' to 'Yo, RE 7, son!')

However, the song's origin goes back to 18th century France. Jean-Jacques Rousseau is credited for penning the melody in 1752 as part of his opera, Le devin du village (translation:The Village Soothsayer).

From there, the song traveled to England, Germany, the United States and Japan. It's appeared in these countries most commonly as a song for school children.

Little is known about Resident Evil 7. Despite the trailer's noticeable lack of zombies (or parasite-infected humans) and guns, Capcom Social Media Specialist Tim Turi states that the new franchise installment does have a place in the overall timeline:

Resident Evil 7 is set after the events of Resident Evil 6, taking place in modern day and revolving around a foreboding, derelict plantation mansion in rural America. Players must explore and survive the horrors within the mysterious, sprawling estate.

A demo for Resident Evil 7 called Beginning Hour was released for PlayStation Plus subscribers in June, with Xbox One owners getting the demo months later in December.

Resident Evil 7 was released on January 24, 2017 on PlayStation 4, Xbox One and PC. The title is also be compatible with PlayStation VR.
