Let's start out with a fact: the 34th annual FMX Birthday Bash kicked ass. It was a great lineup and a great crowd. Everything was awesome from start to finish. Still, it's fun to talk about what could have been. Whenever you're negotiating with bands, any number of things could happen.

So, what fish did we have on the line?  Well, read on.

The very first incarnation of the FMX Birthday Bash was Marilyn Manson. Just a straight up Manson show we were going to do at Fairpark. Then, at some point, he decided to postpone his tour until his album had a bit more time to grow.

Next up, Godsmack was originally approached to be the headliner for the Birthday Bash when it was moved to the April 19 date.

I think this fell through over money, but I can tell you that they have been increasingly jerky about (and at) shows, so I wasn't too disappointed when they bailed. That's once again why we're such fans of Three Days Grace. They've got more hits than Godsmack and are always ready to show up with a smile.

Lastly on this list was a guest that I already had a blog written about. It literally came down to the last minute with this artist and for a while I thought it was going to be him as the special guest. That would have been punk legend Marky Ramone.

Marky had been touring with Doyle and we were trying to get him to extend the tour through the Birthday Bash. This one started going sideways over the weirdest reason: Marky has a strict "no cellphones" clause in his contract that we all knew would be impossible to enforce at a show as big as the Birthday Bash.

Don't get too bummed, especially at us. All these performers were offered the cash and date that someone else ultimately thought was fair. We'll get 'em next time. That's just how the game works.
