Hollywood Undead Announce Comic Book ‘Undead Origins’

Hollywood Undead have built their career on being a larger than life act that incorporates an image well into their musical content. So much so, you wouldn’t be wrong to say they’re like living cartoon characters. Thus, it’s only natural that Hollywood Undead make the transition from real life entities into actual comic book characters, with the announcement of their upcoming comic book Undead Origins, out Dec. 6 through Heavy Metal Magazine.

The comic, according to a press release, “follows Hollywood Undead’s members as they discover a deep conspiracy; all across Los Angeles, people are acting unnaturally happy and compliant. People in the counterculture are suddenly fitting into society, finding square jobs and loving them. Is it clones? Robots? Alien replacements? The crew discovers that in reality, it’s a system of mental and physical alteration, funded by a powerful tech mogul-turned City Councilman. And what’s more, the ‘victims’ aren’t victims at all; they’re undergoing the process voluntarily. But our guys won’t stand for that. They work to destroy the facility, assisted by like-minded people from across the city.”

The comic comes out in December as a nice tie-in to Hollywood Undead’s upcoming album Five. We’ve heard a series of songs already from Five, and have gotten a taste of what the album is going to sound like. Last week the band released their post-apocalyptic video for “Renegade,” showing off a comic book like situation for the band, as it follows a group of wastelanders in a very Mad Max-esque setting. They also leased a boxing-themed video for “Whatever It Takes,” and when the album was announced in July they gave its first impression with the single “California Dreaming.”

“We’re five brothers, and this is our fifth record,” says Johnny 3 Tears, speaking on Five as a whole. “Nothing gets to the essence of the music like this number does. Numerology has a lot of power. When we said Five, it just made sense. The fact that we could all agree on one word codifies who we are. It also nods back to ‘No. 5’ from our first album, because it was our fifth song. Moreover, it hints at this secret society of fans supporting us for the past decade. The number is significant, and this is a significant moment for us.”
