Let me start by saying I love our mayor. That doesn't mean we can't have our differences.

I have to say the claim that Lubbock was anticipating 20-30 deaths from the recent blizzard absolute BS. Or, to take a negative tact, why the heck would you even sincerely believe that two dozen folks would die from snow?

First off, let's get to the sad part of this. One homeless person froze to death. That death is the only one attributed to the snowstorm. But that's kind of not true either. I know of at least one other person who got their car stuck, hiked home, sat down, then had a heart attack and died. So, let's make no mistake: If you put people in unfamiliar situations, there are going to be tragedies.

So back to the topic at hand. Why would you anticipate ANY death? With a little more outreach, both of these deaths were kind of preventable.

Did the city expect us to all go bug-nutty and start shooting each other for the last gallon of milk at the supermarket? Did they expect all of the poor driving habits of Lubbockites to catch up with them on icy roads? Maybe they expected big busloads of folks to tear down The Loop all hairy-assed ape crazy until they hit another busload of orphans?

I personally think the quote that they were expecting 20-30 deaths was a way of making the few deaths we had less tragic. I'm sorry, but they're still tragic and all the BS in the world isn't going to change that.

I think the next time around we should shoot for and anticipate NO deaths.
