You know something great happened during the last couple of years and barely anyone noticed it.  It's called a "lyric video".  It's all you really need from a band.  Some simple imagery, the lyrics to the song and rock on. I kind of think it's the future.  Generally a band, or even a fan, will issue a lyric video then the band will step it up a bit if the song is a hit.

Who needs a crappy big budget video? They really don't make sense.  I can see stepping it up a tiny bit, and I'm going to use the latest from Zakk Wylde to make my points.

In this video (which isn't a lyric video) the band are playing in the studio. You see some random imagery, some still shots of the band, Zakk's fingers shredding on the guitar. It's really all you need.  I think it accomplishes some really wonderful things.  I get to know the band, I get to know the vibe they're feeling when performing the song, I get just enough pretty pictures to keep me interested and I get to draw my own conclusions as to what the song is about.  Now, I imagine Zakk and them dropped some five figure sum on this video, but literally any band could make video like this for the cost of the movie maker software which is probably a couple hundred bucks.  There's just no reason to spend more.

Now, if this video had a director, among other things, I promise you we'd have a woman in a mask dancing in that graveyard, a guy on a horse coming to rescue her, another woman in a mask, but this time a ghost, and then the guys standing around a grave.  The video freeze frames on that final note with a single tear coming out of Zakk's eye.  We just don't need all of that.  It's a great song and a great band and that's plenty:

Here's a lyric video of the same song that somebody threw together. If you're a fan of Dimebag, then this ones for you:
