You aren't as "free" as you think. If you can't do what you want with your own body, then you're not really free at all. I guess that's a good and bad thing. I believe that actually the biggest threat to freedom, is allowing religion to play a part in the discussion.

Society is also going to place restrictions on how free you are. Even worse, religion is going to creep in and do their part to tell you what to do.  The difference is, societal rules are based on what is good for the group, rather than just someones interpretation of a religious text.  Let me break this down a bit before your head explodes.

Society tells you that you are not free to look at child porn.  Great. We can all agree that we do not want that in our society. Religion tells you to "honor the sabbath" or be put to death. Now we've all decided that's a bad thing. The problem is that religion always creeps in and influences society to make rules that regulate your freedom.  That is where we get prohibitions that take away your freedoms.

Right now, society has decided that marijuana use should be legal. Religious leaders call it immoral.  Society has decided to allow places like Las Vegas, Atlantic City and tribal reservations to exist.  Religious leaders fight an adults right to spend (and lose) their money as they wish.  Society has decided that it really doesn't matter if a gay couple marry.  Religious leaders blow their tops as if this is an affront to their religion.  All of things, these prohibitions are roadblocks in your individual freedom.

I proposed the question "Is Too Much Freedom A Bad Thing?" and my answer is "No". I believe the only thing that should get in the way of your freedom, is someone else's freedom.  For the most part, you smoking pot doesn't hurt anyone but you.  You should have the right to throw away your money on gambling; it's YOUR money.  You should be able to marry a consenting adult. You should be able to go to church if you want.

So in the end, sorry kids, you can blame the big bad government for coming down on you all you want, but it is allowing religion to be involved in government that chips away at your freedoms.  Taking it to extremes, your religion may tell you it's okay to throw snakes, but my personal freedom says it's not okay to throw snakes at me. In other words, I firmly believe in your right to go to church but I don't believe you have a right to bring your church to me.  So is this blog an "attack on religion"? No. It's an attack on those people who would inhibit your personal freedoms because it "offends" them, rather than really hurting or having any actual effect on them.

One more example if I may. There's been a conspiracy theory around forever that the President is going to "round us up and put us into FEMA camps", yet a religious leader actually came out last week and recommend that "the gays be put to death".  So, tell me, which one of these is the real threat?
