I've been onboard for this idea for some time now (see what I did there?). I have three important points for you to consider.

#1. Columbus didn't really discover anything. There are volumes and volumes on this topic. First, how do you "discover" something when there are already people there. It would be like you discovering my front lawn. In addition, historians are pretty sure that the vikings, Polynesians, and Egyptians had all been to the land. Some thing China had too.

#2. Columbus was a horrible guy. Here's my favorite Christopher Columbus tidbit. If the Indians didn't bring back enough gold from his minds, he would crucify them 13 at a time in honor of Jesus and his disciples. Yes, you read that correctly.  I really don't think I need to add any more to this topic.

#3. No one sees and real benefit to the "holiday" anymore.  No one gets off work. No one runs around with paper hats that look like Columbus's ships. It's just a hodgepodge of leftover sales for stores that didn't seem to fit any other holiday.

Boot it. It doesn't even have to be replaced. Then again, replacing it with a new holiday may be the best way for people to forget about what the holiday original was.  Kind of like how the festival of Saturnalia became Christmas.
