Five Finger Death Punch will release their sixth album, aptly titled ‘Got Your Six,’ on Aug. 28. Frontman Ivan Moody was a recent guest on Loudwire Nights. Host Full Metal Jackie talked to Moody about the band’s new music, songwriting, upcoming tour + more. Check out the interview below:

How have you changed the most since this band started and how has that change reflected in the lyrics on the new album?

Everybody has to evolve. In that case, everybody has dual personalities. I have, from day one, been a fan of music and when we went into the studio with this one, I told them I was going to unleash the demons. When Zo [Zolton Bathory] looked at me, you know how Zo looks, and said, “Okay what demons are you talking about?” I said, “Every single one.” We have changed so much and to have an uptempo roman candle for a CD -- nobody wanted us to have two, now we're on our sixth. This is pretty impressive, man. I'm gonna tell you straight up. Most people are supposed to gloat about their material, say oh yeah! This is our best album ever. This is truly our best work that we've done as a unit, hands down.

When you're trying to figure out what a song will be lyrically, what do you listen for specifically to guide you when the band gives you new music?

I don't know how else to say it, but I really want to be… I don't know. It's gotta be good. There's a lame way of putting that [laughs], but it has to be effective and it has to inspire me and the guys. I'm the first person to ever say, as a listener, I would never buy that s--t. So, when the guys send me a CD, I want them to absolutely care about what they're doing. Because when I send it back to them, I want them to understand where my headspace was, where I was coming from and again, as a listener, you want people to be affected by it. Music for me was always life changing. So if I'm putting out crap music, then I have not done what I came to accomplish.

What never changes about the way Five Finger Death Punch records albums?

What never changes is that we give each other our own space. When Zo or Jason [Hook] or Jeremy [Spencer] go into the studio and they're writing, I stay out of their hair because I trust them enough to know that what they're doing. It's in the best interest of all of us much less what they want to accomplish. It's really black and white. When I'm in the studio, they only come in when there are certain moments that they want to sit down with me face to face and say hey, maybe we can do this, or this and we critique it. Ultimately it comes out to be the best thing that we could have done together. So, the thing that doesn't change is the respect level. I respect them and they respect me and that's the end of it.

What's the most risky you've felt as a result of wearing your heart on your sleeve, both on stage and in your lyrics?

Everything. My job consists of getting on stage and tearing my chest open and letting people into parts of my life that I would prefer to keep to myself. But I also think that's what connects me with a lot of our fans. There are things that certain people aren't supposed to talk about and they're supposed to keep sheltered and go to psychologists and they try to figure them out on their own. But at the end of the day, we're all human. As you know there has been a lot of days where we get on stage and we become human. We're not rock stars. We're all blue-collar kids who grew up loving music. We have our issues, just like anybody else. I don't know how else to answer that besides, yeah… I apologize for being human.

Five Finger Death Punch heads out on tour with Papa Roach and In This Moment in the fall. Ivan what are you most looking forward to with this fall tour?

For one, I love Jacoby [Shaddix]. He's one of my favorite frontmen of all time. His energy is just fantastic. To get back out and really have passionate bands onstage every single night. You know they're going to bring their A game. It's so overwhelming to me that we've come so far. This is going to be f--king awesome! It speaks volumes. I mean, right now we're on tour with Judas Priest, to supersede that takes a level of confidence and surrounding of people who really care about what they're doing. I think that Papa Roach and In This Moment were great decisions. Everyone is going to get what they want out of the ticket, believe me, pay the price and get down there and we'll make it worth your while.
