The first official trailer is now online for 'Jimi: All Is by My Side,' the new biopic following the life of legendary rock musician Jimi Hendrix, whose iconic career was cut tragically short when he died in 1970 at the age of 27. Andre Benjamin, aka Andre 3000 and one-half of hip hop duo Outkast, plays the soulful guitarist and singer in the new film, and he certainly seems to be a perfect fit.

'Jimi: All Is by My Side' comes from writer and director John Ridley, who previously penned the screenplay for '12 Years a Slave' and is writing the script for the upcoming remake of 'Ben-Hur.' The film follows one year in the life of rock legend Jimi Hendrix, from 1966 to 1967, as he goes from a little known back-up guitarist in New York to making a name for himself in London, and finally blowing the crowd away at the Monterey Pop festival.

Benjamin definitely looks and acts the part, but it takes more than that to make for a winning biopic. The trailer makes use of some psychedelic imagery of the era, which seems like it could make for an interesting component to the film and set it apart from your typical dramatic biopic fare, but we'll see in a few months.

The film also stars Imogen Poots, Hayley Atwell, Burn Gorman, and Ruth Negga, and hits theaters on September 26.
