Following a tough loss to Arizona State University, Texas Tech football head coach Kliff Kingsbury defended Defensive Coordinator David Gibbs and his turnover culture.

Asked whether or not the defense is broken at Texas Tech's weekly press conference, Kingsbury backed Defensive Coordinator David Gibbs and his efforts to build a defensive culture that matches the effectiveness of Texas Tech's air raid-style offense.

"We're disappointed in how we played defensively, but I believe in those guys. I believe in Coach Gibbs," Kingsbury said. "After you watch the film there were times we had positive people in positions and didn't make plays, so we gotta keep growing and keep playing together and go from there."

Pressed further on if the focus on stripping the ball versus just making the tackle is costing Texas Tech 3rd Down shutdowns and points, Kingsbury chalked it up to just poor overall tackling.

"I don't think so. Week one we tackled well. This week we did not," he admitted, adding: "We gotta find a way to get 'em on the ground better."

Not just pointing out the Red Raiders' defensive shortcomings, Kingsbury gave credit where credit was due to ASU.

"The [Arizona State University] quarterback played really well, made great throws...he had a tight spiral, he was decisive, putting it where it needed to be put, and obviously we could have been tighter on coverage, but I thought he was accurate and that was the difference," Kingsbury said.

Texas Tech's next game is against Louisiana Tech Saturday, September 17 at Jones AT&T Stadium in Lubbock, Texas. Listen to Countdown to Kickoff from 3 to 5 p.m. on the air at 1340 AM or streaming online on 1340 The Fan.
