Some of you may remember the hysterical claims of how Lubbock was going to go to hell if it allowed alcohol sales. That was about five years ago, and in almost all categories alcohol problems are down. Most notably, It turned out making alcohol more convenient led to LESS drinking and driving.

For the first couple of years, DWIs went dramatically down. This is just plain common sense. If somebody only has a short drive for a six pack, they're less likely to get drunk while on the road (duh!).

Levelland is one of the few remaining hold-out dry areas, but that may change soon.

Levelland supporters under the name of Levelland Committee For Economic Growth are hoping to get the issue on an upcoming ballot.

So what advice can Lubbock give Levelland on this issue? Just look at the facts.

I'm sure there will be some churches preaching hellfire and brimstone and the downfall of the family. The idea that the entire town would turn into drunks is nonsense spread by fanatics. Lubbock is one of the greatest examples anywhere that allowing alcohol sales DOES NOT have a negative effect on the community. Anyone who tells you that it does is ignoring very clear, very researchable facts.

Good luck to you folks in Levelland. Let's hope you join the rest of civilization soon.
