An early-morning home burglary attempt in Lubbock left a suspect shot and wounded by his would-be victim.

According to the Lubbock Police Department, officers responded to a burglary call at around 2:15 a.m. Arriving at the scene, a home in the 3700 block of 28th Street, they discovered a suspect with a gunshot wound to the stomach.

Speaking with the police, the family of six said that the suspect had broken into their home through a back door. One of the children was woken by the break-in and told his parents that there was a stranger in their home.

The father then confronted the burglar, told him he had a gun and that he should leave.

The suspect reportedly refused to leave and told the family to leave. He then poured lighter fluid on the floor and tried to light the home on fire. During the incident, the father reiterated that he had a gun and would shoot if the burglar didn't stop. The burglar approached the man, cornering him. The man then shot the suspect in the stomach.

The suspect, whose name has yet to be released, was brought to Covenant with non-life threatening injuries. Police have yet to make an arrest. The man and his family were unharmed.
