Who could possibly be against cleaner air? I guess Lubbock is.

The Lubbock Chamber of Commerce is joining other entities in fighting against the Environmental Protection Agency's Clean Air Act.

It's really not that hard to grasp this topic. The EPA wants everyone to reduce carbon emission from electrical plants by 32.9 percent by 2030. The brief filed in the U.S. Court of Appeals claims that this will just cost too much, especially for smaller towns.

But wait, there's more. The Lubbock Chamber is actually cheering a victory in a "regional haze" lawsuit against the EPA. This part of the Clean Air Act's intent was to keep the air clean enough that you could see through it.

I am somewhat dumbfounded by all of this. I understand that regulations do add to the cost of doing business. I also understand that if people can't breath, they're not going to go outside and shop. Our generation is being pretty selfish if you ask me. We are not making the sacrifices necessary for our kids to have a decent world to live in. Instead, we're worried about short term profits and needs.

The next time you get a big ol' lung full of Lubbock dirt, imagine it with a little poison mixed in. THAT is the real cost of ignoring the environment.
