Here's the official statement on why Lubbock is closing the playa lakes:

The City of Lubbock Parks and Recreation Department is temporarily closing all City playa lakes until further notice due to the dangers posed by potentially thin ice. The City is asking everyone to stay away from frozen playa lakes, especially with fluctuating temperatures expected over the next few days. Those temperature changes can cause cracks in the ice and weaken it without being noticeable. Also, the presence of ice on a lake does not guarantee that the ice is strong enough to support the weight of a person. Falling in the cold water places you in danger of hypothermia, which can happen in a matter of minutes.

Here's my favorite quote one more time for dumbasses:

I guess I'd rather not pay the cost of saving morons with my tax dollars, but at the same time I kind of want any one dumb enough to play on the ice to fall through
