I'm still amazed at those people who have allowed the media to paint them into clearly defined corners. There are people who won't even listen to our morning show because we've been branded as "liberal" (how we're defined changes with whatever political party is in charge). Well guess what, this isn't the north versus the south, or some kind of civil war.

Where this matters is people voting or even speaking against their own interests.  Quick show of hands before we get to the next part, if you could have equal economic circumstances when you got there, how many of you would move to Austin?  Trust me, a lot of hands went up. Most people, if they could enjoy the same standard of living, would move to Austin. In fact, 110 people move into Austin EVERY DAY.  Now let's jump ahead for a second. I had some friends head over to Austin for a visit and another friend had commented on their post "why are you going to liberal-land?".  Well, "liberal-land" has live music every night, art, museums, all night pizza places, theater, comedy, amazing restaurants, places to swim, hike, camp, fish, hunt and about a million other things to do. Now, do you think all of these "liberals" might be onto a little something? Don't you think that maybe you can learn a little from them? Trust me, it's not just the geography that makes all of those things possible, it's the people prioritizing how they want to live their lives that make all of those things possible.

So this is the point where some narrow minded jackass says "if you love Austin so much, why don't you move there?".  Well, actually I did.  However it was in the 80's and Austin was a little "too hippie" for me at the time. But it was those same "hippies" that built the groundwork for the art, music and culture that Austin enjoys today.  I also enjoy the fact that I am helping expand Lubbock's entertainment and culture options myself.

So what's my point? Simple, don't paint everything with broad strokes. A completely conservative agenda will never get us splash pads for the kids or places for the community to gather. A completely liberal agenda would get us bills a small town like this couldn't pay.  Instead, let's meet in the middle ground and keep growing Lubbock in a way that makes a heck of a lot less people raise their hands when I ask "how many of you would move to Austin if you could?".
