Here in West Texas we pride ourselves on going big or going home. We also have not only some weird places, but wonderful ones that help guide people toward leading better lives. Trinity Ranch is one such place.

For this week's episode of Weird & Wonderful West Texas, I spoke with Margaret Couch, who owns Trinity Ranch along with her husband Bill, about their vision.

Margaret told me that over 10 years ago when Trinity Ranch was little more than a dream and open acreage, she and Bill felt like, in addition to having a ranch "home" for their horses, they wanted to open it up as a place for people to seek refuge, find healing and learn leadership skills from horses.

Margaret has owned horses since she was 8 years old, and throughout the years she has gained renown and experience as not only a champion horsewoman, but a consultant for CEOs of major companies. She's also a published author and the facilitator of the 'Unbridled Leadership' retreats and workshops at Trinity Ranch.

Margaret has hosted retreats for women of all ages, but specifically young women needing direction and who are in a state of transition and many who are also "at risk." The term Margaret uses for youth in these circumstances, however, are "at promise."

The opportunity these youth and adults encounter is a rare one. Even though they may be from West Texas, many have never seen a horse in person, much less been able to touch one, look them in the eyes or spend a day or two on a ranch simply experiencing the simple beauty of nature and these magnificent animals.

It's just one more example of people and places in West Texas extending open hearts and minds to not only our citizens, but the random Yankee, too.
