On Wednesday, May 4, Maria Martinez (29) was sentenced for her involvement in a 2014 hit-and-run accident that claimed one life.

In July 2014, Martinez struck and killed a jogger, Matthew Valadez, out for a morning run near 20th and Iola. Martinez fled the scene.

KAMC News reports a crime line tip led to Martinez’s arrest a few days later. She was charged with Failure to Stop and Render Aid Involving a Death.

Wednesday, Martinez was sentenced to 6 months in jail, 10 years of probation and 240 hours of community service.

Valadez's family wasn't happy about the sentence Martinez received.

"We're all a bit devastated that she didn't get more prison time than what we thought that she deserved," said Valadez's aunt Leann Johnston [quote via Everything Lubbock].

"Hitting and killing innocent people that are out minding their own business, unless the law changes this is what we're all going to have to face," Johnston said. "I think closure is an over-used word. I think in our hearts we will never have closure because we have to live the rest of our lives without Matt."
