Even though Mastodon released their Emperor of Sand album earlier this year, could we be in for more music from the band coming soon? Singer/guitarist Brent Hinds certainly has added to the speculation. Hinds just posted what looks like the cover art for a new Mastodon album titled Cold Dark Place with the caption "New jamZ coming soon."

Hinds has been discussing the possibility of Cold Dark Place for a good portion of the last year, but the question has been whether it will be an official Mastodon release or a Hinds solo project.

In June of 2016, Hinds told Guitar World that the band was in the process of working on a double album, adding, "One is an album I wrote myself and recorded with Brann [Dailor] and Troy [Sanders] during the Once More Round the Sun sessions." He revealed during that chat that his "part" was called Cold Dark Place, and had to do with a nasty breakup he'd been through. "I wrote some pretty dark, beautiful, spooky, funky, ethereal, melancholy music, which also sounds like the Bee Gees a little bit [laughs]."

We now know that Mastodon did not release a double album, with Emperor of Sand arriving earlier this year. Back in January, we had a chance to chat with Hinds at the NAMM convention and at the time he hinted that Cold Dark Place would be released for Record Store Day 2017. Hinds suggested that it tackled the theme of "living and how much if f---ing hurts to be alive." Record Store Day has come and gone, but there is still the possibility of Record Store Day's annual Black Friday promotion during Thanksgiving weekend.

Hinds was clearly at the forefront of the Cold Dark Place music, and judging by the album artwork and cover listed in his Instagram post below, it looks as though the album will be a Mastodon offering. Stay tuned as more information becomes available.
