And not in a good way.

Lubbock sports writer Don Williams revealed on Twitter that Utah State head coach Matt Wells is the current leader in Texas Tech University's cross-country search for their next head football coach. Expectations for the school's next big hire are high and emotions are hot following the dismissal of Kliff Kingsbury, who ended his six-season tenure with a 35-40 record.

One of the biggest criticisms that could be leveled at bringing on Wells would be that it isn't exactly a flashy hire. But leave it to Twitter to boil down their criticism to GIFs.

Now, it's important to note that the hiring of Matt Wells is just conjecture and there is no telling if Wells is actually the lead candidate, but if he is I do kind of understand the backlash.

Wells took over the Utah State job the same year that Kliff Kingsbury started at Texas Tech. In the last six years, Wells has three seasons with nine-plus wins two came in his first two seasons with the third coming this season with 10 wins and a Mountain West coach of the year award. Sandwiched in between those successful seasons came 6-7, 3-9 and 6-7  seasons. This inconsistent production is the basis for the Twitter freakout.

Again, we don’t know if Matt Wells is the next head coach of the Red Raiders, but I do know that Kirby Hocutt isn't hiring the next guy to be flashy or to make the biggest splash.

He's trying to sign a winner.
