Dave Brockie - better known as "Oderus Urungus," the frontman for intergalactic space lords Gwar - passed away this past weekend. I may not remember what happened this past weekend, but I do remember the first time I saw Gwar.

The first time I ever saw Gwar was on a set of trading cards called the 1991 Pro Set Superstars MusiCards. I don't remember how I acquired them; I think my Mom had picked some up at a garage sale or something and they were stuck in a box. Now these cards featured not only rock and metal bands but also featured all genres of music. So you could get a Gwar card followed by a Billy Idol card but then have a Debbie Gibson stuck in there. This is one of my turning points in music and as I look back on this moment it was a big deal.

When I first saw the Gwar card, I wasn't turned off by their elaborate costumes. I had to know who these guys were. This is all before the internet, so you just couldn't look up a band, you had to go and seek them out. So I went to the only source I had: a magazine called Hit Parader where I could then find out who these guys were. Later on in life, I saw Gwar play numerous times and met them here in Lubbock when they played with Job For A Cowboy and Lamb Of God.

Dave Brockie - AKA Oderus Urungus - was also featured on Fox News' Red Eye and would even be a guest on The Dan Patrick Patrick Show. I f you look on Dan Patrick's wall, you can still see a Oderus Urungus mask.

Oderus Urungus will be missed, but as he returns back to his home planet he will be remembered with Metal Horns thrown up in the air!
