Lubbock Police are investigating the assault of a police officer in a bizarre incident that occurred just before midnight Wednesday, July 29.

According to LPD, an officer stopped at a convenience store near 19th Street and Iola to check on a disabled truck that was parked at that location. A fracas between the officer and the driver of the truck ensued when the officer discovered that the truck in question was stolen. The driver then attempted to flee on foot.

The suspect was able to wrestle his way into the officer's patrol car, then reportedly drove the cruiser into a telephone pole. The officer, who was holding on to the vehicle, suffered moderate injuries when the accident occurred.

Both the suspect and the officer were transported to UMC with what is believed to be non-life threatening injuries.

Lubbock Police Lt. Ray Mendoza said the accident investigation team and the person crimes unit are investigating the incident.
