UPDATED: Parts of North Lubbock Evacuated Due to Acid Leak with Bayer Crop Science

Lubbock Fire Department

UPDATE 2:05a, May 9, 2013

Within the past 15 minutes, Lubbock Fire Department officials have corrected the chemical that is leaking from a tanker in North Lubbock. The chemical leaking is hydrogen chloride. According to LFD, when released into the air, hydrogen chloride reacts with the moisture in the air to form Hydrochloric Acid. It has a vapor density of 1.268 which means that it is heavier than air (it sinks) but is readily dispersed by wind.

Also, the Salvation Army shelter at 16th Street and Avenue J. is now open for those needing shelter during the evacuation. Personal items like pillows, and toiletries can be brought to the shelter.

Just after Midnight, Thursday morning, parts of North Lubbock were evacuated after an acid leak with Bayer Crop Science in the 100 Block of Erskine Avenue.

According to Nick Ochsner with KAMC 28 News the lead was discovered by Bayer Crop Science employees around 7p, Wednesday night.

The chemical leaking is described as an Anhydrous Hydrochloric Acid leak by Lubbock Fire Department officials. The Anhydrous Hydrochloric Acid is leaking from a 3000 pound tank located on a trailer consisting of 10 tanks. A Lubbock Fire Department Hazmat team is on the scene to monitor the situation. A specialized Hazmat team from Dallas is en route to Lubbock. The team from Dallas will transfer the contents of the leaking vessel to a new containment vessel. Lubbock Fire Department officials expect the Dallas Hazmat team to arrive around 5:00am.

The Salvation Army, with the help of the Red Cross, is opening a shelter for affected Lubbock citizens in Downtown Lubbock at 15th Street and Avenue J.
