Yesterday (June 4) we reported that thunder and lightning storms wreaked havoc on the Rock am Ring festival in Mendig, Germany on Friday (June 3) when a lightning strike on the grounds caused 71 injuries, with 15 of those people being hospitalized. After another day of weather-related issues and more inclement weather ahead, organizers decided to cancel the Sunday performance (June 5) performances.

In a statement issued by organizers and translated from German, it was revealed that the injury toll had risen to 80 visitors who were either partly or badly hurt. The festival attempted to continue Saturday, but once again suspended action when more inclement weather arrived in the area. The statement on the the matter, posted on Facebook, can be read below:

Rock am ring ends on the second day
Dear festival goers,
Rock am ring must be prematurely after the second day will come to an end. Due to the weather warning for the Sunday revoked the municipality mendig spielgenehmigung today for the final festival day on Sunday. In responsibility for the welfare of the fans accept the organisers of this decision. On the first day of the festival day were more than 80 visitors through strikes partly badly hurt and has been admitted in hospitals. Due to the risk we would like to ask you, after the end of the performances the journey home no later than Sunday at noon, 12:00 PM.
We regret the decision, however, you ask for understanding for this emergency, which is due to the storms.

Photos from the Rock am Ring festival grounds showed flooding in the camping areas and emergency vehicles having issues getting traction in the mud-soaked terrain. Video footage of Friday's incident can be seen below. This year's lineup included Red Hot Chili Peppers, Black Sabbath, Volbeat, Disturbed, Breaking Benjamin, Amon Amarth, Deftones, Shinedown, Bring Me the Horizon, Korn and many more.

This marks the second year the festival has been plagued by weather issues, with 33 people hospitalized in 2015 after a lightning strike.
