Science Doesn’t Care What You Believe

I have a vague memory of one of the first science experiments I ever saw. I don't remember the ultimate lesson, but part of it was sugar+water=sweet water.  That's some real basic stuff, but when you're 3 or 4 you don't know how Kool-Aid works, you just think it exists.

Let's do a bit tougher one.  Take a glass of water and try to float an egg in it. It will sink.  Now, start adding salt to that water (about six tablespoons).  Now try to float the egg on it. The egg WILL float.  The conclusion is that the salt makes the water dense enough to float an egg.

Now, scientists would probably go further. They would test this over and over again, make sure the water was pure, see if they could do more or less salt, the would probably even try other substances.  Heck, most scientists would go back after a period of time and recheck their findings.

Now, here' what I want you to do. Close your eyes and believe with all of your heart that that egg will sink. If you want to, call some friends and have them tell you the egg will sink. Also, Google some websites that say that the egg will sink. Guess what? The egg won't sink. Science doesn't care about your beliefs.

You can probably find a way to make science work within your worldview. You can believe a higher power set up these rules for how things work, it doesn't matter what you do to make it fit your brain, science is and always was a thing. The world is round, vaccines work, and right now science is telling us that our climate is changing and that's not a good thing.

We must always continue to explore ourselves and the world and universe around us if we are to continue as a species, otherwise, in another hundred million years some new lifeform will be studying the science of why we died out.
