Wouldn't you know it just as Led Zeppelin is preparing to re-release their first three albums a new (but old) controversy erupts.

A lawyer representing guitarist Randy California, formerly of the band Spirit, says he will file an order to block the re-release of the song citing charges of copyright infringement. Citing Zeppelin stole the intro to Stairway to Heaven from the bands song Taurus (the two bands did four shows together between 1968 and 1969).

California, who died while attempting to rescue his son from a rip current in Hawaii, had never publicly accused the band of using his material until an interview in a 1997 edition of Listener magazine.

According to one of the family attorneys, the suit was not filed sooner due to a lack of funds to pursue the issue.

In a statement to Bloomberg Businessweek attorney Francis Alexander Malofly, states: "the goal is to give California a writing credit on Stairway to Heaven."

How ironic is it that the family was able to round up the money to file this lawsuit right before the re-release of the song.
