System of a Down are getting themselves ready for 2017, but what exactly are they planning? We know that there's a European tour scheduled for June of next year, but the guys have been spending plenty of time in the studio of late rehearsing.

Both Shavo Odadjian and John Dolmayan just posted short Instagram videos of members of the band in the studio working through some music. It's mostly some noodling around, with Daron Malakian riffing a bit on guitar, while Dolmayan pounds away on the skins. Not shown in the videos is vocalist Serj Tankian. Check out the videos below:

System of a Down's last studio album was released in the fall of 2005 and while the band has reunited on multiple occasions to play tours, the last decade plus has not yielded any new music from the group. During that decade, each of the group's members have involved themselves in a number of different projects, with Tankian arguably being the busiest over that time. But earlier this year, Tankian suggested that the timing may finally be right for the group to pursue new music.

He explained, “We’re communicating and trying to see if we can bring our material together. There’s definitely a lot of communication going on, a lot of back and forth. I can’t make a statement in terms of whether we’re going to have a record or not, because we haven’t gone into the studio and done it. But there’s definitely communication going on, songs being played to each other and all that stuff, so it’s good. We’ll see what happens.”

Given that the band's touring currently doesn't start until June of next year, could this studio time be more than just rehearsal for the shows? The band have been posting updates since September. Only time will tell, but we'll keep you up to date if more shows are added or new music is announced.
