It was this time last year (March 3) that we lost legendary guitarist Ronnie Montrose (who battled prostate cancer for five years) to a self-inflicted gunshot wound. The last time the surviving original Montrose members were in the the studio together was back in 1973. After forty years, Sammy Hagar joined original bassist Bill Church and original drummer Denny Carmassi last week to record some new music.

It's very sad to me that I know very few people will read this. Ronnie Montrose was one of the true unsung heroes of what is now called "Heavy Metal". He successful combined absolutely CRUSHING electric guitar groves to the songs "Rock Candy" and "Bad Motor Scooter". My favorite track "Space Station #5" featured really cool electric guitar effects that took Hendrix's chirps and squeeks a step further. More after the break.

So Sammy hasn't completely closed the door on rejoining Van Halen and there are reports that VH is currently recording a new album with Dave. On both counts...I'll believe it when I see it. All the chaos aside, Van Halen is still one of my favorite bands of all time.

I wasn't a big fan of the first Chickenfoot album, even though I'm a fan of all the members of the group. I'm hoping they come out with something just a little more modern for their second release. Regardless, the guys are fun to watch joking around in this studio update.
