A Marietta man went outside at 3 a.m. with his .38 revolver last Thursday morning and made a decision that he instantly regretted.

Reuters reports that the unidentified man shot at the armadillo and the bullet ricocheted back and hit him in the jaw.

Cass County Sheriff Larry Rowe said the man spotted the armadillo and opened fired. His wife was inside the house and able to help him help. He was airlifted to a nearby hospital.

His jaw was wired shut, and there's no word on how extensive the damages are.

The status of the animal is unknown as no body was found.
