The No. 17 Texas Tech baseball team won its first Big 12 Conference series of the season by defeating the Kansas Jayhawks 3-2 Sunday at Dan Law Field at Rip Griffin Park.

Senior right-hander Corey Taylor (2-0), relieving starter Ty Damron, allowed his first earned run of the season, but that was all as overall Taylor pitched 4.2 innings, giving up five hits, two walks and struck out three.

The run Taylor allowed in the eighth inning snapped a 29.1 inning scoreless streak to start the season. Taylor’s ERA grew to 0.29 in 31 innings of work over 12 appearances.

Sophmore Anthony Lyons picked up a two-out RBI single, driving home Eric Gutierrez, in the bottom half of the eighth to break a 2-2 tie  and provide the winning margin for the Red Raiders (18-10, 3-3).

Kansas reliever Stephen Villines (1-1) took the loss allowing the game-winning run in one inning of work.

Gutierrez led off the inning by drawing a walk off Villines, advancing to second on a sacrifice bunt by Corey Raley and then got to third on a Tim Proudfoot ground out before scoring on the Lyons hit.

Lyons is batting .625 (5-for-8) as a pinch hitter this seaso, and is now batting .500 (8-for-16) career as a pinch hitter.

Dominic Moreno relieved Taylor with two out and two runners on base in the ninth to record his fourth save of the season and seventh career by striking out Kansas shortstop Justin Portacio.

Tech Recorded 10 two-out RBI in three-game series batting .344 (11-for-32) with runners in scoring position, and hitting .342 (13-for-38) with two outs in the series

Texas Tech will play its first midweek road game of the season on Tuesday at New Mexico (14-11) with a 3 p.m. CT first pitch at Lobo Field.
