I believe I actually saw this topic on USA Today last week.  For some reason it keeps popping up in my brain goo.  I'll give you some pretty good examples.

The original list includes places like Las Vegas because you're expecting glamor but there's a real tragic air underneath it all.  It also listed Hollywood because there's just not much to see unless you're a real insider.I think Lubbock would make the list.  If you were a big Buddy Holly fan and planned to spend more than a day or two here, you just wouldn't have anything to do.

The first thing that came to mind for me was Tombstone, Arizona.  Now my apologies to anyone who lives there now, but when I visited it was just a bunch of dusty exhibits that seemed to be made in someones basement.  The second place on my list would be "The Thing?".  If you've ever driven between Arizona and California you'll see dozens of billboards that advertise "The Thing?".  All of these billboards really work on you, or if you were like me, you work on your parents until you HAVE to stop and see "The Thing?".  Now "The Thing?" is, well....it wouldn't be nice to tell you WHAT it is.  That's part of the allure of "The Thing?", you JUST DON'T TELL.  The fortunate thing about "The Thing?" is, they usually let you use your admission price towards a purchase.

So what about you?  What tourist traps have you fell for, or are there places you went that just didn't excite you as much as they promised?
