You might think there is a big cultural war over gay rights going on out there, but the fact is the war is over. You're just seeing the final skirmishes in the more rural areas of the U.S.

The saying used to be that whatever is popular on the coasts takes about two years to make it to the south. I found this to be SO true until the internet came along. Now it's more like a year, but we still lag behind.

Half of the U.S. population lives on the coasts. Then there are those who live in the large cities of the U.S. The fact of the matter is, the more populous an area, the more people are exposed to other cultures and lifestyles. These areas tend to be a bit more accepting than the small towns across America. On the coasts and in the large cities, gay is OK. It's not that special, or unusual; it's just a day to day fact of life that people accept.

My family was fortunate enough to be in L.A. for the Gay Pride parade. Once an outrageous event, the parade is more about simple acceptance these days.

Want proof that this is now mainstream? Let me give you just a short list of some of the sponsors of L.A. Pride: Bud Light, Nissan, Wells Fargo, Bank of America, Bank of the West, Pepsi, Fiat, Macy's, Netflix, Univision, Yahoo and on and on. (You can see the full list here.)

The fact is that big business is very accepting and supportive of gay rights. If for some reason you wanted to boycott the business that financially supported the parade or had a float in it, you not only wouldn't be able to leave the house, you'd probably have to sell your house because a company that supports gay rights is probably financing it.

If you're not OK with this, it's time to work on it. Marriage for gay people has now been legal for a year and it hasn't affected any heterosexual marriage. There hasn't been any reckoning, rapture or whatever the insanely religious predicted would happen.

Gay people are just people, and you should treat them as awesomely as you would anyone else.
