Lubbock Online is reporting that UMC has suspended it's kidney transplant program. With Convenant having discontinued their program in 2009, this means there is no place in Lubbock to get your gizzards switched out. UMC may not be totally out of the picture though:

“We are taking a complete review of the program and looking at all aspects of how it operates,” said Greg Bruce, UMC vice president of corporate affairs.

The decision may or may not have anything to do with the program receiving no stars in a recent Health Grades review.  The last published review of the program put UMC just a fraction below the national average in survival rates.  I myself would be willing to forgo that fraction just to have my business taken care of locally.  I hope UMC realizes that some of us are willing to stick by their side if they decide to resume the program.  If some of us don't step up and say, "I'm staying here", then how they heck are they supposed to get better?

It would be a damn shame, a black eye and an embarrassment if this area lost all of it's kidney programs.  I'll be the first to wear a "UMC Loves My Guts" shirt.

Kidney shaped pools are popular.  I don't really know why.  I'd rather have the extra space of a pure oval.
