I was asked by several members of the gay community, then by KCBD, to speak about some very insensitive and hurtful comments by local radio host Wade Wilkes. I guess they all know that I can't resist defending my hometown, our people and even my profession.

Now you need to understand one more time that this guy is a blip. But when the story gets picked up by statewide media, it makes us all look bad. Here's the quote from radio host Wade Wilkes again:

Hello goofy Obama, it’s a hook up bar. No one was ‘sharing’ ideas or talking about ‘civil rights.’ They were getting lit, using illegal drugs and spreading STDs.

Wow! So some a.m. deejay in Lubbock, Texas has it all figured out? So much for us wasting time electing those constitutional scholars.

Sarcasm aside, is this really what we want the families of the victims to hear out of Lubbock, Texas? I thought we were good people who had a little empathy for the families of the victims, not the kind of people that would accuse them of being drunken, drugged-out, disease spreaders.

Yesterday, Wilkes had an opportunity to clarify his remarks. He apologized, then repeated and defended them all over again. Watch the video below to see this.

This leaves no doubt as to this not being a mistake, but a sincerely held belief. That, or the guy just can't articulate his thoughts well enough to speak to the public.

We should add a new word to the dictionary: 'Unpology.' Because if there was ever an exact opposite of an apology, it's the one Wilkes gives in this interview.
