This could be the fight of our lives. There are certainly more important things, but probably nothing that will affect your life as much as net neutrality. The concept seems a little hard to understand, but it really isn't. You really should take some time to learn about this -- if not from me, then from someone else you can trust: porn stars.

It's pretty simple. Right now, all data that flows through the Internet is treated or handled equally. Whether you're watching a movie or buying a car, everything is processed the same.

The problem is without net neutrality, some of these things could be slowed down to direct traffic in preferential ways or to even charge for different levels of service.

Simply put, let's say a telecom company decides that streaming movies is taking up too much of it's bandwidth. They could choke those streams down unless the place streaming those movies pays them more -- which is something that apparently has already happened.

Or look at it in a simple way. A big car dealer may pay to have quicker access to their website, while a smaller dealer is stuck with a slow connection making it harder for them to compete.

You could even, theoretically, end up with a system like the mail, meaning different rates gets you different delivery times. You could end up having to pay for the instant email you have now, or have your email artificially slowed down. You could also end up with "data plans" like you have on your cell phone.

Simply put, an end to net neutrality means money out of your pocket and a less fair playing field on the internet. You can read more on net neutrality and decide for yourself.

Okay, you're already looking down below this text, aren't you. This is a funny bit. I wish they wouldn't have brought politics in it, but I guess that's the way things are going to go down.
