After all the name brand candidates were ballyhooed this week, it might seem like a letdown to hear that Matt Wells from Utah State is the guy that comes to Texas Tech. Not Bob Stoops, Mike Leach, Dana Holgorsen, Seth Littrell or Neal Brown. It's Matt Wells.

What adds to the frustration is that there isn't a lot to know about Matt Wells. Sure, you can look at his time at Utah State, but how do those numbers translate from the Mountain West to the Big 12? Nobody can know for sure. Though everyone will likely get the opportunity to see it for themselves soon as the hire is now official.

Wells is an enigma, because the surface numbers from Utah State paint him as pretty average. His recruiting classes also leave a lot to be desired, with most of his classes ranking near the bottom of the Mountain West. Is it enough to say that even though most of his recruiting classes from the last six years were in the bottom half of the Mountain West he still had five bowl trips and three seasons with more than nine wins? You can certainly draw the opinion that if he can do that at Utah State, imagine what the resources of Texas Tech can provide.

The Wells decision has come with plenty of controversy on Twitter, but it's always hard to ascertain exactly what the truth is while relying on message boards and "reliable" sources who are always unnamed.

Texas Tech Athletic Director Kirby Hocutt not only got a guy he really wanted, but he's also trying to completely revamp the culture of Texas Tech football. This hire isn't off the Leach tree. It's not a retread who has spent time at Texas Tech. Wells isn't an alumnus; he's a fresh start.

It's also being reported that Wells is bringing offensive coordinator David Yost and defensive coordinator Kieth Patterson with him to Lubbock.

Patterson has coached in the high school ranks in Oklahoma and Texas and has been through Tulsa, West Virginia and Arizona State before joining David Wells at Utah State. Yost has coached at Toledo, Missouri (when it was in the Big 12), and Oregon. He also coached receivers for the Pirate in Pullman from 2013 to 2015.

This triumvirate was responsible for Utah State rushing for 2,444 yards and passing for 3,466 yards. They scored more than 47 points per game and held opponents to just 23. They were 1-2 against teams with winning records, and 8-0 against teams with losing records.

Locally, as far as the fanbase goes, this hire has been met with some pushback. Nationally? It's being praised as a solid hire:
