Guess what? I don't care what town/state/planet you're "from". I care about who you are. If your identity is tied into where you live, then you probably don't have a personality of your own.

Every place has winners and losers, heroes and sh#theads.  I am not singling out any one person, but have you noticed that people from Austin always start the conversation with "I'm from Austin"?  It's not that big of deal, people from places like "L.A." (they're already too cool to say Los Angeles) and New York people do the same. If you're in a smaller size town, you can expect to hear it even more.

Now this is a tiny bit shallow. Some people use these touchstones as ways to make a connection, like maybe you know someone there and you two will hit it off because you "both used to drink beer with old so and so who now lives there too". More often than not, that person is looking to achieve a couple of cool points with you because they come from (or more likely moved to) a cool place.  Let's look at Austin & L.A. since they were my previous examples. Both have cool art scenes, lots to do and some better than average weather. Both also have insanely bad traffic, throngs of aggressive homeless and are so expensive to live in that most folks there are barely making it (have you noticed that most of your friends that moved to Austin live with 3-4 other people?). So with all this in mind, I am not impressed with your geographic location and in many cases it's obvious that you made that living choice because you had nothing else going on.  Try getting a personality instead of a new address.

Note: Coincidentally I met a young lady from Austin this weekend, it is not about her, but about many of the people who share her hometown. Now, everybody go be awesome, WHEREVER you are.
