Doctor Dennis Tedford of Brownfield accepted a plea deal Monday for illegally dispensing a schedule IV substance.

KAMC News reports that Tedford admitted to prescribing 524,777 doses of hydrocodone to 341 patients between March of 2016 and March of 2018. He also prescribed 96,763 doses of carisoprodol during that two-year time period to 102 patients.

"Tedford stated that during his 25 years of practicing in Brownfield, there were about half a dozen unexplained and out of hospital deaths," court records said.

Investigators asked another doctor to review some of Tedford's patient files.

Court records say 10 of the 12 cases involved the use of controlled substances "for no legitimate medical purpose."

If the plea deal is approved by the court, Tedford could serve a maximum of 5 years in federal prison.
