This is one of those things where you can say, "Only in Texas". Literally no other school in the country uses a hippo as a mascot. The town of Hutto, Texas just east of Austin decided back in the 1920's to pick the hippopotamus as the school's mascot after an incident that happened in the town back in 1915.

Hippo Breaks Loose from Circus Train in Hutto, Texas

Back in the day when the circus still had animals. They would transport them from city to city using trains. We all remember the scene in 'Dumbo' with all the different animal cars. Well one circus train lost control of one of their hippos in Hutto, Texas. The animal wondered off to nearby Cottonwood Creek and lounged in the mud for quite sometime. This caused train delays all day since the circus could not move on without the hippo. Apparently this hippo got Hutto some headlines so why not name the sports teams after the hippo?

Hutto Also Had 'Hefty' Children Back in the Day

In what may seem as a weird form of bullying. The Hutto Historical Commission also recognizes another story from back in the day. Apparently Hutto at the time had big Swedish and German families that, let's just say ate well. According to opposing football coaches, they said the Hutto offensive line was, 'As big as hippos'. Whatever story you choose to believe. The hippos exist to this day and the only school to have them are right here in Texas.
