If you’re thinking about starting a family or adding another kiddo to the mix, here’s something to consider: A new study from the University of Michigan says having kids can actually help you live longer—but only if you have two.

That’s right. Researchers looked at the health records of 276,000 people and found that parents with two kids are 5% to 10% more likely to live to 76 than people without kids. That’s about three years longer than the global average life expectancy.

But there’s a catch. If you go overboard with more than two kids, you’re less likely to hit 76 than someone who doesn’t have any. And surprisingly, having just one kid doesn’t do the trick either. Two is the sweet spot.

Why? Researchers think it’s all about balance. Two kids give you the perfect amount of social interaction while keeping the economic and physical stress manageable. It’s like the Goldilocks zone of parenting—not too much, not too little, just right.

Now, I’m not saying you should be popping out another baby just to get a few more years under your belt. But if you’re debating whether to stop at one or go for two, this might make you rethink your game plan.
