Here in Lubbock, we might not face wildfires like folks in California, but emergencies can strike anywhere—and being prepared is always a smart move. Whether it’s a wildfire, tornado, or even an unexpected evacuation for another 'reason', having a “go bag” ready can save precious time and stress.

So, what should you pack? Cal Fire’s experts have a checklist for wildfires, but it works for ANY emergency. Here’s what they recommend you keep ready to grab and go:

10 Must-Have Items for Your Go Bag:

  1. Food & Water: Pack a three-day supply of non-perishable food and three gallons of water per person.
  2. Map It Out: Have at least two evacuation routes planned and ready to follow.
  3. Medications: Make sure to include any prescriptions and replace them before they expire.
  4. Clothes: Pack at least one change of clothes and old glasses or contact lenses if you need them.
  5. Keys: Keep an extra set of car keys in your bag. Trust me, you’ll thank yourself later.
  6. Cash: Stash some bills and maybe an extra credit card for emergencies.
  7. First Aid Kit: Don’t forget basic medical supplies and hygiene items.
  8. Flashlight & Radio: A battery-powered radio and extra batteries can help you stay informed when cell service is spotty.
  9. Important Documents: Copies of passports, birth certificates, or anything else you might need.
  10. Pet Supplies: Include food and water for your furry family members, too.
